Our vision of Embedded Systems is that they are a lot more difficult to develop than traditional IT systems. Not only because of the risks involved if those systems fail, but also because of the complex multi-tiered design chains and multi-domain expertise involved.

Embedded systems are becoming increasingly powerful and distributed. As their requirements complexity, connectivity, storage and compute capabilities grow, so does the complexity of the software they run. This complexity results in both an opportunity and a challenge. The opportunity is to create targeted system solutions with the flexibility to adapt to usage models. The challenge is to create, deliver and manage cost-effective distributed systems that allow this level of variability.

As a consequence, Embedded Systems tend to have very complex tool chains with lots of variations from platform to platform, and teams to teams. Managing those tools and the use case variability is a real challenge, but at the same time, accelerating effective front to back specification, verification, implementation and validation activities, using advanced tools and methodologies is the only way forward.
